In one of the most popular markets in the USA, the 2021 Chevrolet Trax doesn't have nearly enough to stand out from the crowd, especially with cars like the Kia Seltos, Mazda CX-30, and Hyundai Tucson leading the segment. While that powertrain is fine for urban commuting, it feels overly strained at higher speeds and its six-speed automatic transmission squelches any pep with its sluggish responses. The 2024 Trax comes only with a single engine choice, a turbocharged 1.2-liter inline-three with 137 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. Power comes from its 1.4-liter Ecotec turbo inline-4 engine that imparts a meager 138 horsepower to either its front- or all-wheel drivetrain. Unfortunately, that's about all one does get from the Trax. As a lifted CUV, the Trax imparts the driver with a commanding view of the road and good visibility all-round, and despite being a subcompact 5-door, it still has a surprisingly spacious cabin and decent trunk. "Beyond that, the Trax's ride quality exhibits quite a bit of choppiness, and there's a fair amount of road noise.Cheap and cheerful, the 2021 Chevrolet Trax is a subcompact crossover that offers buyers a modern and cutesy design, easy city drivability, and family-worthy safety standards all at the relatively attractive price of $21,400.The small SUV doesn’t have the verve and fun-to-drive traits of a Mazda CX-30 or turbocharged Hyundai Kona or Kia Seltos, but it’s acceptable." - Kelley Blue Book "As an urban runabout with some brief highway commutes thrown in, the 2021 Chevrolet Trax is adequate. Its diminutive size enables the Trax to easily fit in spaces and garages where larger SUVs would have trouble." - Autotrader "One thing the Trax does very well is slide into tighter spaces. This Chevy comes standard with front-wheel drive, and all-wheel drive is optional. However, its ride is on the firm side, so it can feel jarring over rough pavement. The Trax is a breeze to maneuver into tight parking spaces. Models with all-wheel drive get an estimated 24 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. Trax models with front-wheel drive get an EPA-estimated 26 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway, which is roughly average for the class. "And while most entries in the class have modestly powered engines, the Trax's turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder fails to live up to even those low expectations." - Edmunds (2020).At higher speeds you’ll notice the Trax is louder than its more premium twin, the Buick Encore." - Autotrader Its small turbocharged 4-cylinder engine has reasonable muscle. Just like engine air filters, cabin air filters in your 2021 Chevy Trax are designed to uniformly clean the air as it moves through your air conditioning. It’s not as fun to drive as a Mazda CX-30 or turbocharged Kia Seltos or Hyundai Kona, but the Trax is acceptable for basic duties. "The Chevrolet Trax performs adequately as a city-centric errand-runner with the occasional highway commute thrown in."The Trax’s turbocharged 4-cylinder engine provides a reasonable amount of muscle, although going uphill while fully laden may make you wish for something beefier." - Kelley Blue Book. The Trax has enough power for commuting around town, but the engine feels underpowered and noisy at highway speeds. Transmission: standard six-speed automatic.Drivetrain: standard front-wheel drive available all-wheel drive.
